About Michael Collins
Hello, and welcome to my site! I first became passionate about photography in the late 1990s, when I picked up my first SLR film camera. This was a starter kit from Vivitar. I basically used it to take nature photos, mostly of wildflowers. A couple years later, I upgraded to a Nikon film SLR, an N90S. To try it out, I went to my first lighthouse in Saint Joseph, Michigan. The pier was iced over, but I edged my way all the way to the end. I was just wearing sneakers, which was insane. Today, I wear boots and crampons when venturing out on the ice. Regardless, I was instantly hooked and kept photographing lighthouses up the west coast of Michigan. Eventually, I branched out to other locations along the east Coast of Michigan, as well as the Upper Peninsula. I have also photographed lighthouses in Indiana, Ohio, and Minnesota. Some year, I hope to tour around the Eastern Seaboard, but that’s just a dream for now. Lighthouses aren’t my only passion, though. I also love photographing landscapes as well as picturesque waterfalls. Wildflowers and garden flowers are another passion. I love the riot of colors and enjoy the challenges of doing fine macro work on these delicate, vibrant subjects. Gear I recently switched to Nikon mirrorless cameras. I basically have three kits, one for macro work, one for architectural work, and another for everything else. Macro Kit: Nikon Z5 Nikon 105mm macro lens Nikon 200mm macro lens Nikon FTZ II converter Nikon 50mm macro lens Nikon 24-200mm all-in-one zoom General Kit: Nikon Z9 Nikon 14-24mm zoom Nikon 24-70mm zoom Nikon 70-180mm zoom Nikon 180-600mm zoom Architectural Kit: Nikon 28mm PC lens Nikon 19mm tilt/shift lens Nikon FTZ II converter Tripod Really Right Stuff tripod and ball head Of course, I will swap lenses out between kits as needed. I use the Z9 for architectural work.
